Building beds for my square foot garden

Hi,
Here are some photos from the building of my beds for my square foot garden. Don’t know what square foot gardening is?
It is a very effective way of growing more in a smaller area. Please see the link at the bottom of this post for more information.
Here I am, starting on my very first squares, back in 2006.

Starting the very first square
The digging starts:
Lawn be gone, welcome vegetable garden
Now we made the big mistake, we built the beds using these tiles. All well and good it seemed, until the first winter, when they all froze and cracked and had to be replaced with cedar wood.
And we were blissfully unaware of what was to come
We built a total of four 4X4 squares this first year, using the tiles
Starting on square number 4
Having moved on, and having replaced the tiles with cedar wood, now it’s on to building longer beds. These are 12X4.

Great looking garden! I only hope to have something like this one day. Nice website too! Just wondering, how do you tend your strawberries throughout the winter etc…I have some planted in an earthbox and am wondering what to do when the growing season ends.

Hi Lani,
I just let them die back naturally with the cold season. Then I clear away the runners and trim back the plants, take of the cover and replace with a new cover, carefully threading the plants through pre-cut holes.
This year I decided to start Tristar in a 4X4 square foot bed. I am now growing Mignonettes in an earthbox, and they are so big and lush that last winter I never even had the chance to change covers for them, so when they needed some fertilizing, my husband created a “fertilizer slurry” using about 2 cups of organic fertilizer in water and poured into the earthbox watering tube using a funnel. Not a good idea, it absolutely STINKS now when we water them! So we have to figure out something else. Suggestions are welcome!
